Cheap Flights to Stanley

Stanley, formerly known as Port Stanley, is the capital of the Falkland Islands. This city was founded in 1843, and today is home to more than 1,500 people. Accommodation in Stanley includes numerous bed and breakfasts as well as a handful of hotels. Buildings are generally older, and the warm hospitality also seems to come from a bygone age. While in camp, lodging includes everything from old farmhouses to lodges built specifically for tourism. Prior to the construction of the Panama Canal, Stanley was a major repair stop for boats traveling through the Straits of Magellan. Arrivals to Stanley either come by boat or from the airport. Most large cruise ships will dock near the center of town and allow passengers time to roam the city and possibly take trips by vehicle to nearby wildlife sites. When arriving by air, passengers will come in from Mount Pleasant airport, which is located 56 km from town. Taxis and a shuttle bus can drop passengers off anywhere within the town. The smaller airport located just outside of town is used for domestic flights, although it is possible to land on an international flight at Mount Pleasant airport and then take a domestic flight to Stanley. The Falkland Islands Museum in Stanley has extensive information about the 1982 conflict, as well as history of the Falklands and some exhibits on Falkland Islands flora & fauna. The majority of shops in central Stanley cater to the huge number of cruise ship passengers that pass through the town in the summer. Malvina House Hotel, 3 Ross Road, is located across the street from Government Jetty. The Waterfront Hotel and plenty of other guesthouses are also available in Stanley. Today, Stanley is the main shopping centre on the islands and the hub of East Falkland's road network. Attractions include the Falkland Islands Museum, Government House, built in 1845 and home to the Governor of the Falkland Islands (currently Alan Huckle), a golf course, and is known for its whalebone arch, a totem pole, several war memorials and the shipwrecks in its harbour. The Falkland Islands Company owns several shops and a hotel. Stanley has four pubs, eleven hotels & guesthouses, three restaurants, a fish and chips shop and the main tourist office.
