Falkland Islands consist of two main islands and several hundred smaller islands in the south Atlantic Ocean, off the east coast of southern South America. They are a United Kingdom Overseas Territory, but nearby Argentina claims jurisdiction under the name Islas Malvinas. Sea Lion Island is the most southerly inhabited island in the Falkland Islands. Most visitors arrive to the island using the government air service. The landing strip is dirt but well-maintained, and the old grass strip is still maintained in case of unfavourable winds. Flying is the most reliable way to the island. Due to rough seas, cruise ship landings (and supply ship visits) are a "hit and miss" proposition. The big attraction of this island is the wildlife. Elephant seals are at their height from September until November. The numerous small ponds on Pebble Island make it an excellent destination for birders. The cruise ships sometimes visit New Island for approximately three hours, allowing visitors to take a walk to the rockhopper penguin, black-browed albatross and king cormorant colony. Saunders Island is a working sheep farm, but also one of the premier wildlife destinations in the Falklands. Tourism in the Falkland Islands is being actively encouraged and increasing rapidly, with about 30,000 visitors in 2001; a significant part of the increase is from visiting cruise liners. The majority of visitors are from the UK but efforts are being made to encourage wildlife and adventure tourism. The Falkland Islands are a victim of the Antarctic ozone hole, so it is important to wear sunscreen on sunny days during the early summer.
